Second National Federal Savings Bank, based in Annapolis and Salisbury, returned to profitability during its first quarter, which ended March 31, as the troubled thrift avoided the large provisions for problem loans that had plagued the company in previous quarters.

Mid Atlantic Medical Services Inc.

This Rockville-based health maintenance organization holding company posted its best-ever operating revenues and net income for the quarter that ended March 31. Operating revenues were $86.1 million, an increase of 98 percent over the same quarter of 1990, when $43.5 million in revenues were recorded. ++ Net income for the first quarter was $2.86 million, compared with $1.85 million last year.

Despite its first-quarter accomplishments, MAMSI is undergoing a re-evaluation this year to assure that both strategic business direction and daily business operations are on target, according to George T. Jochum, the chairman, president and chief executive officer.
