Just when Boys' Latin coach Bob Shriver thought his Lakers were going to have a fairly easy time with Gilman yesterday, something happened.

"We had the [lead] 4-0, and we were getting ready to put it away," Shriver said. Then "we lost some concentration. We got a little lazy on defense."

But Shriver's worries were unfounded.

Third-ranked and host Boys' Latin, helped by Kevin Bryan's three assists, rebounded from eighth-ranked Gilman's late first-half charge to blank the Greyhounds in the second half and score a 9-2 victory in a Maryland Scholastic Association A Conference game.

Boys' Latin [9-1 overall, 4-1 in the conference] took a 4-0 lead, but Gilman [5-3, 2-3] got goals from Athan Sunderland and Bryan Smith just eight seconds apart to cut the lead at the half.

The second half, however, was all Boys' Latin.

The Lakers scored three goals in less than two minutes in the third quarter to break the game open. Jeff Jurist [3:55 left in the quarter], Gene Lower [2:43] and Kevin Lutz [2:02] scored for a 7-2 lead.

The Lakers outshot Gilman 13-1 during the quarter, and it ultimately stopped Gilman's momentum.

"We said we wanted to get [that] first goal," said Lower, who finished with two goals. "It would help give us momentum and start us off with a bang."

In other A Conference action, Tony Nugent scored two goals and Sean Burke had four assists to lead host No. 7 Calvert Hall (8-2, 3-2) to a 7-5 victory over No. 2 St. Mary's (7-2, 3-2).
