Dr. S. Bernard Hughes Jr., 80, a Baltimore native wh practiced osteopathic medicine in New York City and worked in research institutions, died of heart disease March 13 at his home in Philadelphia.

A memorial service for Dr. Hughes will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Sharp Street Memorial United Methodist Church, Dolphin and Etting streets.

He moved to Philadelphia four years ago after retiring as a data analyst for the Manpower and Career Development Agency in New York.

He graduated from Douglass High School and Lincoln University, where he was quarterback on the football team, a member of the track team and captain of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity basketball team.

He earned a doctor of osteopathy degree in 1943 from the Massachusetts College of Medicine and Surgery.

His first wife, the former Dr. Vivian Andrews, died.

He is survived by his second wife, the former Kathryn Coleman of Philadelphia; a sister, Ann McAllister-Hughes; a brother, Dr. Donald Hughes; and his stepmother, Blanche Hughes, all of Baltimore.
