E. Shore woman is killed, 4 others hurt in collision

THE BALTIMORE EVENING SUN

An Eastern Shore woman was killed and four others injured when two cars collided at the intersection of Md. 291 and U.S. 301 near Millington in Kent County, State Police report.

Police said Christine Hedwig Payne, 77, of Still Pond, was driving dTC a 1990 Chrysler New Yorker west on Md. 291 about 4:40 p.m. yesterday when she failed to grant the right of way to Preston F. Jones, 41, who was driving a 1980 Chevrolet Caprice south on U.S. 301. The cars collided, police said.

Marjorie Harris Woolens, 68, of Chestertown, was declared dead at the scene, police said.

Payne sustained fractured ribs and other internal injuries and was admitted to Kent & Queen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown, police said.

Jones, whose address was not available, and the two passengers in his car also were taken to Kent & Queen Anne's where they were treated and released, police said.

Police said that driver error on the part of Payne contributed to the accident and that charges against her were pending.

State Police at Pikesville said the fatality brought to 156 the number of people killed on Maryland roadways so far this year, compared with 192 at the same time last year.
