DURHAM, N.C. -- Right-hander Matt Murray, 20, threw six innings of two-hit, shutout ball to lead the Durham Bulls to a 4-0 win over the Frederick Keys last night in the season opener for both clubs.
Murray (1-0) retired the first eight batters he faced, striking out four, before Keys second baseman Tony Beasley reached on a bunt single in the third inning. Murray then retired nine in a row, a string that ended when center fielder Damon Buford tripled in the sixth.
Keys starter Chuck Ricci (0-1) lasted four innings, struggling with his control as he walked four and hit a batter.
