Boys' Latin tops St. Paul's in lacrosse

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Boys' Latin scored eight unanswered goals in the second half en route to a 14-9 win over No. 3 St. Paul's in a Maryland Scholastic Association A Conference Division II lacrosse game.

The difference for the Lakers was a speed advantage at midfield and better ball control. Boys' Latin kept the ball by winning 16 of 23 faceoffs.

"The difference was the faceoffs," said Mitch Whiteley, coach of St. Paul's (5-1, 1-1). "Their faceoff men did a heck of a job, and you can't score goals without the ball."

Faceoff duties for the Lakers (7-0, 2-0) were shared by midfielders Chris McGhay and Ryan Smith.

Once the Lakers gained control, attackmen Kevin Lutz, Gene Lower and Mark LaVerghetta were able to finish the job. Lutz scored five and added three assists, and Lower and LaVerghetta scored three apiece.
