Rose's 3-month sentence at halfway house over

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Pete Rose ended his three-month sentence at a halfway house yesterday, but still faces nearly three months of his community-service sentence for tax cheating.

"I just want to get my life back on track," Rose said as he got into a red Chevy Blazer and drove away from Talbert House in Cincinnati.

He was given the day off yesterday from his community-service job as a gym teacher's assistant in the city public schools so that he could make a paid appearance at an autograph show in Birmingham, Ala. From there, he said, he would go to Florida and spend the weekend with his family.

* PIRATES: Pittsburgh officials called a news conference for 8:30 a.m. today amid speculation that the team would either announce the signing of three-time All-Star Bobby Bonilla or a move of their spring-training site to Winter Haven, Fla.

* UMPIRES: Negotiations for a new contract between major-league umpires and the American and National leagues appeared headed for a marathon session as the sides attempted to negotiate a deal before the weekend.

Robert Kheel, negotiator for the major leagues, and union chief Richie Phillips met all day yesterday, broke for dinner, then resumed talks shortly before midnight. Umpires have worked without a contract during spring training.

* TIGERS: Rickey Henderson is questionable for Opening Day with tendinitis in his left shoulder.

Meanwhile, outfielder Jose Canseco and his wife, Esther, are trying a reconciliation only 2 1/2 months after he filed for divorce in Florida.

* BREWERS: Infielder Gary Sheffield, who has criticized the team's management the past two years, said in an interview published in the Wisconsin State Journal, general manager Harry Dalton doesn't know baseball and is ruining the team.

* RED SOX: A court hearing in Houston was postponed until June 7 for Boston pitcher Roger Clemens and his brother, arrested in January on allegations they assaulted an off-duty police officer at a Houston nightclub.
