Two local swimmers qualify for nationals

THE BALTIMORE EVENING SUN

Dan Van Hemert of the Retrievers Aquatic Club set a national age-group swimming record of 1:48.27 in the 200-yard butterfly at the National Junior Olympics in Buffalo. The 16-year-old from Ellicott City also won the 500 and 1,000 freestyles and the 200 individual medley.

The Retrievers' other winner was Elysia Moreland, 14, in the 400 individual medley. The times by Moreland and Van Hemert in their winning races qualified them for the Phillips 66/U.S. Swimming Spring Nationals this week in Seattle.
