A Mass of Christian burial for Joseph F. Grottendick Jr., president of a church goods company, will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Roman Catholic Church of the Resurrection, Paulskirk Drive and Chatham Road in Ellicott City.

Mr. Grottendick, who was 53 and lived on Paulskirk Drive, died Wednesday at St. Joseph Hospital of complications following bypass surgery.

Born in Baltimore and reared in Catonsville, he was a 1956 graduate of Calvert Hall College and a 1964 graduate of the University of Baltimore.

Known as Dud, a nickname he inherited from his father, he was president of J. F. Grottendick & Sons Inc., which his father started in 1947.

He was president of the Nova Catalogue Group, an organization of fellow members of the National Church Goods Association, which publishes a joint listing of their merchandise. He was also a member of the Eastern Church Goods Guild.

Also, he belonged to the Serra Club of Baltimore and the Engineering Society of Baltimore.

Mr. Grottendick is survived by his wife, the former Mary Virginia Hopwood; a son, Charles Gerard Grottendick of Ellicott City; two daughters, Mary Jo Evelius of Catonsville, and Ann Louise Grottendick of Ellicott City; two brothers, Paul F. Grottendick Sr. of Reisterstown, and Hubert Cochran of West Virginia; five sisters, Alva L. Berry of Elkridge, Sister Marie Bernadette, V.H.M. of Richmond, Va., Lee Ann Walsh of Ellicott City, and Kathleen Schoeffield of Ellicott City; and three grandchildren.

Another of Mr. Grottendick's sons, Michael Joseph Grottendick, died in 1971.
