The last known suspect in the shotgun robbery of a Towson credit union three weeks ago was arrested last night at the Edmondson Village Shopping Center, where he was selling oils and incense from a makeshift sidewalk stand, authorities reported.
Baltimore County police said the FBI played a key role in identifying 29-year-old Michael Anthony Fouchong as a suspect though out-of-state investigative work, and in tracing his whereabouts to Baltimore.
At least five people are believed to have taken part in the holdup March 7 that terrorized workers at the Maryland State Employees Credit Union building on LaSalle Road.
One suspect, apparently left behind by the other fleeing bandits, briefly held several employees as hostages before surrendering to police officers who had surrounded the building.
Four suspects are now in custody, and a fifth is dead -- killed in an exchange of gunfire with the police in Wilmington, Del., after a bank holdup.
Mr. Fouchong, of the 600 block of Cooks Lane, West Baltimore, who police said is also known as Muta Walkil, was charged with armed robbery. He was awaiting a bail hearing last night.
E. Jay Miller, a Baltimore County police spokesman, said investigators believe that Mr. Fouchong was among the bandits photographed by surveillance cameras during the credit union holdup.
He was arrested without incident by county officers about 6:45 p.m. after an assisting Baltimore City officer approached him and asked if he had a peddler's license. He did, Mr. Miller noted.
Also charged in the credit union robbery are Eric C. Wheeler, 29, of West Baltimore, who was captured at the scene; Tony Bedford, 19, also known as Sadiyq Abdullah Muhammed, of Baltimore, who was arrested at a Virginia airport March 9; and Michael Montell Boston, 22, of Annapolis, who was wounded in the Wilmington shootout and remains hospitalized.
The suspect killed after a shotgun holdup at the Wilmington Trust Co. was Edward Spencer Punnett, 26, of Philadelphia. At least four people robbed the Wilmington bank, and were spotted and chased by the police.
