Cole named to head Morgan's defense

New Morgan State football coach Ricky Diggs has named Lawrence Cole, former running backs and special teams coach at the University of Toledo, as defensive coordinator for the Bears.

A graduate of the University of Nebraska, Cole was team captain and an All-Big Eight selection on the Cornhuskers' 1979 team. He played with the New York Jets in 1980.

Cole also has held assistant coaching jobs at Wisconsin, Kansas State, Ball State and New Mexico State. A native of Dayton, Ohio, he will have complete responsibility for the Bears' defensive efforts.

"We are fortunate to get a guy with L.C.'s credentials," says Diggs, whose coaching staff for next season now is set. "After talking defensive football with him, we both seem to have the same defensive philosophy. I feel comfortable that Morgan's defense is in good hands."

Defensively, Anthony Green will coach the line, Anderson Powell will handle the secondary and Cole will be defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, with help from graduate assistant Willie Jones.

Morgan opens spring practice April 3, and the 1991 season begins Aug. 31, when the Bears host North Carolina A&T; at Hughes Stadium.
