Sykesville man missing after canoe capsizes

A Carroll County man was missing and presumed drowned yesterday in the Liberty Reservoir after the canoe he and his son were fishing from capsized, state police reported.

The search for the body of David Leroy Leppo, 54, of the 6600 block of Carroll Hollins Road, Sykesville, will resume today, police said.

His son, Andy Offatt Leppo, 23, of the same address, was rescued by another boater, Edward Joseph Federline Sr., of the 1600 block of Andyline Way, Sykesville.

Mr. Federline told police he saw the canoe capsize about 4:10 p.m., pulled the younger man from the water and took him to the shore of the reservoir before returning to look for the father.

He was joined by divers from the Gamber Volunteer Fire Company's underwater response team and the Maryland Natural Resources Police, assisted by two state police helicopters in the unsuccessful search.

What caused the canoe to tip over was not known last night, but police said there were high winds around the reservoir at the time.

Body found floating in Susquehanna River

The Harford County sheriff's office was trying yesterday to identify the body of a man found floating in the Susquehanna River near the Conowingo Dam.

Deputy DeWayne Curry said a construction worker first saw the body, which was floating face up in the water on the north side of the dam, about 1 p.m.

The body was that of a white middle-aged man wearing only blue jeans with a brown belt. Deputy Curry said the man appeared to have been in the water for several days.

Frederick Avenue man fatally shot in kitchen


A 20-year old man was shot and killed early yesterday in the kitchen of his Southwest Baltimore home, city police reported.

The victim, Randolph Wright, was found shot once in the back in his kitchen in the 2400 block of Frederick Avenue, police said. He was taken to Bon Secours Hospital, where he was pronounced " dead, police said.

Relatives of the victim told police that they were upstairs when they heard gunshots about 5:35 a.m. Mr. Wright had been in the kitchen with a friend before the shooting, homicide detectives said.

Police had made no arrests last night.



The family of Steven S. Bernstein, a 27-year-old Rosedalman who was killed Saturday in a hit-and-run accident on Pulaski Highway near Contractors Road, announced a $500 reward yesterday for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. * The city of Annapolis will celebrate Maryland Day today. Officewill be closed, and there will be no residential trash pickup. State government offices will be open. More than 1,000 visitors toured Historic St. Mary's City over the weekend to celebrate Maryland's 357th birthday, according to a spokeswoman for the visitors center there.
