Sales of Harford homes go up 6 percent in 1990


The Harford County real estate market, which skyrocketed t dizzying heights in 1988 and 1989, made a soft landing in 1990.

The median price of county homes rose a comparatively modest 4 percent and total sales were up 6 percent for the full year, according to data collected by Rufus S. Lusk & Son Inc.

That's a far cry from the 11 percent and 12 percent rises registered the preceding two years, said Joan Ryder, president of the Harford County Association of Realtors and a sales associate at Prudential Preferred Properties in Bel Air. But it doesn't represent a market in the doldrums either, she said.

"Right now, we're in a normal market," she said.

According to Ms. Ryder, Harford's diverse housing stock has insulated the county from the downturn that has affected many tTC other localities.

"We have all price ranges and there's still affordable housing in Harford County," she said.

Strong showings around Havre de Grace and in the Street-Dublin area reflected strong demand for properties in the more rural north county, according to Therese Redmond, manager of the Century 21-Diana Realty Inc. office in Bel Air.

"People want to be in the country," she said.

If there was a pocket of weakness, she said, it was around Fallston. The Lusk figures showed an 11 percent sales decline there in 1990.

Ms. Redmond cited Country Manor in Bel Air, the county's first condominium cluster development, as a particularly hot seller. Ms. Ryder said other hot areas include Amyclae in the Route 543 corridor, Overview in the Abingdon area, and Hunters Run and Kings Charter in the Route 24 corridor.
