Skipjacks make playoffs for second straight year

The Baltimore Skipjacks, for the second consecutive year, have clinched a berth in the American Hockey League's Calder Cup playoffs.

Baltimore's 3-3 tie with the New Haven Nighthawks, coupled with the Utica Devils' 5-3 loss to the Binghamton Rangers Friday night, boosted the Skipjacks into the playoffs.

The Skipjacks, who play Binghamton at 7:05 tonight at the Baltimore Arena on Fan Appreciation Night, can finish as high as second or as low as fourth in the Southern Division.

If the Skipjacks finish second or third, the playoffs will begin April 5 and 6 in Binghamton. Should Baltimore finish fourth, the Skipjacks will play a two-game miniseries with the fifth-place team, probably the Hershey Bears, at the Baltimore Arena April 2 and 3.

In addition to the Skipjacks, Binghamton and the Rochester Americans have clinched playoff spots in the Southern Division. The Springfield Indians and Cape Breton Oilers have made the playoffs in the Northern Division.
