The Capital Volleyball Club had four teams advance to the playoffs of the St. Patrick's Day Classic on Saturday at Old Mill High School.

The Capital under-16 Blue, featuring Catherine Kirk of Severna Park, reached the final before losing to Liba of Long Island, 15-13, 16-14.

The Blue's roster also contains Severna Park's Katie Marks, an outside hitter who was unavailable Saturday.

"This was quite an accomplishment. I think we surprised ourselves," said Chris Green, who was filling in for Coach Kelli Myers.

"Up to this point, the best finish we've ever had in this tournament was losing in the semifinals."

With her team missing two outside hitters, Green credited the Blue's bench for "great support."

The Capital Red, another under-16 entry, was eliminated by the Delaware Sophomores in a tie-breaker in the quarterfinal round. Four Severna Park students -- Lori and Suzi Sharpless, Julie Kasprzak and Gwen Erlandson -- play for the Red.

Two Capital under-18 teams also fared well.

The Red, with Colette Marquis of South River, lost to Liba in the quarterfinals, while the Blue, with Kim Aller of Severna Park and Stacy Gilligan of Glen Burnie, lost to the South PA's of York, Pa., in the semifinals.

The Red had beaten Deerfield Silver (Old Mill's Mia Padgett and Jen Schmittle)in the first round.
