St. Frances misses Gray, falls short of third place

FROSTBURG -- Playing without All-Metro center Devin Gray for the second straight game, St. Frances (19-8) ended its third varsity season with a 76-50 loss to St. John's in the third-place game of the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament at Frostburg State on Saturday night.

Gray, 6 feet 6, underwent an emergency appendectomy Friday night. He had scored 38 points in Thursday's 67-59 win over Bishop Kendrick.

It was the final game for St. John's coach Joe Gallagher, who registered his 868th win in 44 seasons. David Cox scored 20 to lead the Cadets (27-6).

Eric Carroll scored 28 and kept St. Frances close in the first half, but the Panthers couldn't match St. John's size without Gray.

St. John's led, 13-8, after the first quarter and extended its lead to 32-21 by scoring the last eight points of the first half. The Cadets led, 56-34, after three quarters.
