B&J; POOLS INC., ACCORDING TO ITS OWNERS, IS A COMpany that prefers the challenge of building the specialty pool. That is why they were delighted to work with landscape architect Kurt Bluemel on creating a meditation pool -- and more -- in the rear garden of this Roland Park home.
Not only was the pool to be designed for sports -- various games and activities from swimming laps to volleyball -- but it was to have a minimum of deep water to cut down on the users' need to tread water while playing water games. The homeowners also pointed out that they loathed the idea of having a pool "that looks just like a swimming pool stuck in the back yard."
Because of the lack of depth (3 1/2 feet to 6 feet), there is no diving board. The propane-heated pool is gunite with a dark, almost black Marbelite finish, features blue stone coping, and also acts as a reflecting pond. It has been fitted with interior lights for night swims, and uses a Polaris cleaning system. The rectangular shape of the pool allows the use of an automatic cover for ease of maintenance and heat retention. The result is a multiuse pool with a strong meditative mood.
