Trammel pulls away, wins ARCA 500K

HAMPTON, Ga. -- Greg Trammel overcame a botched pit stoand took advantage of Charlie Glotzbach's engine failure to win the ARCA 500K yesterday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

It was his first super-speedway victory.

Trammel, a member of the Bill Elliott racing team in Dawsonville, Ga., inherited the lead when Glotzbach's ignition failed while he had a two-lap cushion with only 36 to go on the 1.522-mile oval.

Trammel, the fastest qualifier, drove a Ford to pull away from Ken Ragan, in a Buick, in the final laps and win by 22 seconds.

Trammel's speed of 131.532 mph, despite eight caution flags for of the 204 laps, set a record for the race. It broke Jimmy Horton's mark of 131.488 mph set last year.

Bobby Bowsher was third in a Ford, followed by Jerry Hill in a Buick and Cecil Eunice in an Oldsmobile.

Motorcraft 500

HAMPTON, Ga. -- Dale Earnhardt, saving something for the next day, turned in the fastest qualifying speed for the Motorcraft 500 yesterday, but will start in 21st position today.

Alan Kulwicki led the 20 cars that qualified Friday with a speed of 174.413 mph.

Earnhardt toured the 1.5-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway oval at 185.351 mph yesterday.

Gold Coast Indy

SURFERS PARADISE, Australia -- Halfway around the world from where Indy cars usually race, today's inaugural Gold Coast Indy will present similar problems to other street circuits.

"I think it's going to be a long, hard race," said Michael Andretti, who will start at the front of the 25-car lineup in the 65-lap, 181.545-mile race.

High on the list of likely problems will be brakes, fuel consumption and the concrete barriers that line the 2.793-mile circuit.

"Basically, it will be a conservative race, trying to save the car and be there at the end," Andretti said.

The race that will open CART's 17-race season is the sanctioning body's first venture outside of North America.

Federation International Sport du Automobile in Paris, the international race sanctioning body and the Formula One organizers, did not want this event to be held.

FISA officials call it an outlaw race because it is an international event being put on by what they deem a domestic series. Threats were made by FISA to ban participants from international competition.
