In wake of cutbacks, volunteers helping keep state parks open

Gov. William Donald Schaefer announced Friday that Jane Island State Park will open Monday with the assistance of the Janes Island Volunteer Group. The park is among 12 state parks that were to be closed until July 1 because of budget constraints.

The volunteer group of Crisfield-area residents will assist in reopening the 3,147-acre park in phases.

New Germany State Park, another of those 12 parks, will remain open through the end of March at least as the result of actions by a save-the parks committee headed by Tom Williams of Bethesda.

Williams' group has given nearly $5,000 in cash and services to the park.

New Germany had been allowed to stay open until March 1, while the 11 other parks were expected to be closed starting Jan. 1. Earlier, citizen volunteers started a program at Gambrill State Park which allowed it to reopen.

Greenbrier State Park near Boonsboro is initiating a program of camp hosts, whose 20 hours of volunteer service in the park would be rewarded with a free campsite. Prospective volunteers could help with light maintenance work, host visitors at the visitor center and assist in general park operations.

Volunteers are asked to call Ranger Cedric Poole at the park in Washington County (301-791-4767).
