Heritage Bowl, pitting MEAC, SWAC victors, to be held in Florida

THE BALTIMORE EVENING SUN

MIAMI -- Barring a last-minute glitch, college football's newest bowl game is coming to South Florida. Joe Robbie Stadium will be named host of the Heritage Bowl after officials meet in College Park tomorrow afternoon to work out the details.

The inaugural Heritage Bowl, tentatively scheduled for Dec. 21, will match the champions of two predominantly black athletic conferences -- the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Fort Lauderdale insurance agent Jim McKinley, point man in South Florida's effort to get the bowl, refused to confirm yesterday that JRS was selected. He said "we're very confident," and confirmed he was invited to tomorrow's meeting.

Eight other cities, including Atlanta and St. Petersburg, bid for the bowl.
