UMBC defeats Maryland, 6-5, in 10th

THE BALTIMORE SUN

COLLEGE PARK -- Brent Nickels' RBI single in the top of the 10th inning led the University of Maryland Baltimore County (6-2) to a 6-5 victory over the University of Maryland (4-6-1) at Shipley Field yesterday. Nickels' hit drove in Bob Mumma, who had reached base on an error and stolen second.

Greg Elliot's bases-empty home run had given UMBC a 5-2 lead in the top of the ninth, but Maryland came back on run-scoring singles by Todd Netter and Scott Olson, and tied it when pitcher Brian Raino hit Brett McGonnigal (Loch Raven) with the bases loaded. Raino got the win, setting the Terps down in order in the 10th.
