Reamer's closes its Charles St. store

Reamer's, a local menswear retailer, has closed its Charles Street location in downtown Baltimore and is consolidating merchandise at its last remaining store in Pikesville.

The Charles Street store is the second Reamer's location to go out of business in recent months.

A store at Greenspring Shopping Center in Pikesville closed late last year. The Charles Street store, which was part of the Charles Plaza complex and opened in May 1986, closed about a week ago, said Herbert Reamer, owner of the retail operation.

The remaining store, at Woodholme Center, has been open two years.

The chain, founded in the mid-1940s, once had locations in the Pimlico area and at Towsontown Center. The Pimlico store closed in 1966 and the Towson store closed in 1988.

Reamer blamed the recent closings on the recession. There were no jobs lost and Reamer said two employees who worked at the Charles Street store and one employee who worked at Greenspring have been transferred to the Woodholme location.

"Charles Street was good for us for many years," Reamer said. "But the [economic] climate today just indicates consolidation. We feel we can do a better, more efficient store in one location." Reamer said the location of the store on Charles Street was not a problem.

Laurie Schwartz, executive director of Downtown Partnership, a non-profit group whose aim is to promote downtown vitality, said the departure of Reamer's is not an omen for downtown.

"We were sorry to see Reamer's close," Schwartz said. "However, I think it's a good retail location and we are confident that the space can be filled with another retailer in the near future."

An advertisement in The Evening Sun and The Sun announcing the Charles Street closing and a consolidation sale at Woodholme indicates Reamer's had lost its lease for the Charles Street location.

But Vann Massey, vice president of Enterprise Development Co., which manages the Charles Street property, said that both parties are currently negotiating a "mutual termination of the lease."

Massey and Reamer said the parting is amicable.
