Maryland romps past Howard, 14-5 COLLEGE BASEBALL

COLLEGE PARK -- The University of Maryland (4-5-1) scored four in the fourth and five in the sixth en route to a 14-5 victory over Howard University (1-12) at Shipley Field yesterday. The game, played in windy, 45-degree weather, was called after seven innings.

Chris Smoot led a 12-hit attack for the Terrapins with three hits, including a two-run homer, plus three RBI and three runs scored. Todd Nutter had three hits, and Brett McGonnigal (Loch Raven) and Drew Johnson two hits apiece. Johnson also drove in three runs.

Junior John Rayne was the winning pitcher. Howard's Lee Jones and Donnell Brown each touched him for two hits.
