Paul P. Gross Bata division chief

A memorial service for Paul P. Gross, a retired Bata Shoe Co. division president, will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Charlestown Retirement Community's Our Lady of Angels Chapel in Catonsville.

Mr. Gross, a resident of Aberdeen before moving to the retirement community last year, died there Friday of cancer. He was 81.

Born in Vienna, Austria, he was a graduate of the Textile Engineering Academy there.

His career with Bata Shoe began in 1938 in the export department in Czechoslovakia. He left Europe the next year and came to the United States when the international firm built its Maryland plant in Belcamp.

Mr. Gross retired in 1973 as president of Bata's former Weinbrenner Division in Merrill, Wis.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a special agent in the counterintelligence corps in Europe.

He was also a member of the Rotary Club in Aberdeen.

Mr. Gross is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Lilly Fischer; a son, Gary P. Gross of Roanoke, Va.; and three grandchildren.

The family suggests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
