Mabel Dawson Was Christian educator


Mabel Dawson, retired director of Christian Education for th Maryland Council of Churches, died March 3 of pneumonia at a nursing home in Wellesley, Mass. She was 88.

She retired in 1969 after 24 years on the job in Baltimore.

During that period, she served on a committee for religious television broadcasting for children and helped to produce such shows in Wilmington, Del. She also held interracial camps and conferences for youths as well as developing religious education programs for the retarded and training camps for church camp leaders.

Before coming to Baltimore, Ms. Dawson was a Girl Scout leader.

Born in Needham, Mass., she attended Middlebury College and graduated from Boston University. She earned a master's degree in religious education from Hartford Seminary in Connecticut.

Before taking the Maryland post, she was an education director for Presbyterian Churches in Pittsburgh, New Rochelle, N.Y., and Bay City, Mich.

Ms. Dawson was a member of the Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church in Baltimore.

She moved to South Bend, Ind., in 1979 and moved to Needham about three years ago.

Services were held Wednesday in Needham.
