The Hummers Sporting Cafe unlimited team won the Soccer America/Mitre National Indoor Championship in Atlanta last weekend.
The team representing Hummers, of Fallston, won seven games to outlast 31 other teams from across the country, including the San Diego Sockers reserve team and The Spartans, a team composed of former Washington Stars players coached by John Kerr. They finally earned the championship with a 7-2 victory over the San Diego Stars.
Midfielder Sam Mangione earned Most Valuable Player honors and midfielder Roberto Ascenzi and goalkeeper Brian Hartlove were named to the all-tournament team.
Leading the way in the scoring parade for coach Kevin Healey's team were Greg Barger, Chris Webbert and Doug Miller, the Loyola College product who is the No. 1 draft pick of the Kansas City Comets in the Major Soccer League. Each had two goals in the championship game and Paul Wojcik scored one.
For its efforts, Hummers won a plaque and $2,500 in sports equipment from the tournament sponsor.
