Water pipe break leaves homes dry, closes schools

A broken water main at Poplar Grove Street and Gwynns Falls Parkway in West Baltimore today left 125 households without water and forced the closing of two nearby schools.

The break occurred about 8:25 a.m., according to a spokesman for the city Department of Public Works.

Students arriving for classes at William H. Lemmel Middle School and Gwynns Falls Elementary School were sent home as crews worked to repair the break.

Shell Stokes, spokesman for the public works department, said crews turned off a water main at Tioga Parkway and Denison Street to repair the break.

The break is expected to be repaired by midnight and water restored to all households shortly afterward, Stokes said.
