14-and-under boys

The Anne Arundel Optimist Lightning of Mike Coleman dropped an 8-4 decision to K. C. S. C. of Pikesville Saturday at Myers Pavillon in Brooklyn.

Scott Vane Scored two goals for the Lightning. Jimmy James tied The game at 2-2 when he scored unassisted in the second quarter. Pikesville picked up a goal before the half and led 3-2.

Vane scored his second goal of the game on a pass from Aaron Coleman to cut the lead to one4-3, in the third quarter.

Todd Clingan scored an unassisted goal in the fourth quarter, but then it was all Pikesville.

The Lightning (1-1-1) will try to get back on the winning track next Sunday when they take on the Linthicum Force at 5 p.m. at Myers Pavillion.

1977 boys

The Severan Park Stingers 1977 boys team upped their record to 2-0 Saturday by edging EDRECO, 5-4, at Myers Pavilion in Brooklyn.

Chris Cannella recorded a hat trick for the victors on assists from Brain Deitz. Jeremy Schneider and J. T. Carhart. Carhart scored the Stingers two other goals, one unassisted. and the other on a feed from Jonathan Holleran.

Adam Hurst guarded the net for Severna Park and registered 14 saves. Providing Hurst with the necessary defense support were fullbacks David Miller and Matt Griswold.

The Stingers will try to make it three in a row Saturday when they take on Perry Hall in a 6 p.m. matchup at Myers Pavilion.

COUNTY BASKETBALL

1977 boys

While the Austin Rice Company was just 1-for-10 at the line and also shot poorly from the floor in the first half, the East Glen Burnie Athletic Club Warriors scored 16 unanswered points and took a commanding 27-3 lead at the half on the way to a 44-29 romp.

Daniel Lee paced the Warriors to what was a county 12-14 Saturday League championshp at George Fox Middle School. It was the Warriors ninth straight win without a loss for Coach Tom Carroll.

Lee tallied a game-high 20 points, including one three-pointer, and had two rebounds, two assists and three steals. A dozen of Lee's points came in the first half.

Lawrence Hines, Danny Griffith and Earl Ellington also sparkled for East-Glen Burnie. Hines hit 10 points while Griffith had five points, 11 boards, three blocks, one steal and two assists. Ellington had a game-high six steals and added three points, two boards'and one assist.

ARC (4-5) got 16 points (4-for-11 at the line) and a game high 15 rebounds from Terry Weathers while Mike Turpin chippen in with 11 points and eight boards. Weathers also had three steals and a blocked shot.

Rob Fuller didn't score but had five rebounds for ARC and teammate Sean O'Malley scored the other two points and had two rebounds and two steals.

12-and-under girls

Cape St. Claire's 12-and-under girls team of Salvatore Anello forced the B division title into a tie Saturday by coming from behind and defeating Crofton, 11-9.

Cape, who trailed 6-0 at the half and was down 8-4 after three quarters, battled back and scored five points in the final minute and 15 seconds to hold off upstart Crofton. Kelly Anello tied the game at 9-9 when she buried a 20-foot jumper with 30 seconds remaining.

Cape St. Claire then scored the winning bucket following and inbounds steal by Tonia Warnecke. Stacy Smith scored the deciding points with two seconds showing on the clock.

Kelly Anello finished the game with four points, while center Lesa Goodhue contributed with two points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Angela Shuttleworth supplied the Cape with an excellent defensive effort while chipping in two points.

The Cape (7-2) will try and clinch the 12-and-under title on Saturday when it battles Mayo Red at Central Middle School. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.

10-12 girls

Undefeated GARCI routed Mago Vista Mavericks, 25-7, in a 10-12 league matchup at Central Middle School this past Saturday.

The Mavericks, who fell to 5-4 with the loss, were led by Lisa Davis, who tallied four points. Becky Shank added two, while Carrie Vain added a foul shot to go With a team-high 10 rebounds. Summer Nugent contributed nine boards in a losing effort.

10-12 boys

Taking the cue from their 8-10 team, the 10-12 Severn Athletic Club followed the younger team to the court at George Fox Middle School Saturday and hammered the Austin Rice Company 42-25 to clinch the county championship.

Severn (9-0) has a two-game lead With one to go. Coaches Gary Leventry and Richard Paice Will close out their season Saturday against Greater Glen Burnie at 2 p.m.

Point guard Desharn Lewis guided Severn to the rout with six points and game-high totals of 15 boards and eight assists. Lewis, who had nine of his rebounds in a 19-4 first half for the victors, also had three steals and three blocked shots.

Lewis was one of three Severn players in double figures with the others being Rascheed Savage and Antwaun Smith. Savage bagged a game-high 15 points and had 13 rebounds and three steals.

Smith tallied 13 points, six boards and one steal.

Rodney Watt also chipped in with six points and three rebounds for Severn. The winners out-re-bounded ARC, 40-18, 24-8 in the decisive first half.

ARC (5-4 league and 8-6 overall) was led by Mike O'Malley and David Marcus. O'Malley had nine points, six boards and three steals while Marcus had six points. five rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot.

Also, ARC got four points each from Ryan Stewart and Andrew Helms, who grabbed three boards.

8-10 boys

The Edgewater Nets 8-10 boys basketball team improved on its unblemished 9-0 record Saturday by downing the Rolling Knolls Rebe1s 35-20.

Shane Done and Nicki Nicholson provided the Nets with a fantastic defensive effort. Nicholson recorded six blocked shots in addition, to 12 rebounds. Also playing wcll for the victors were Alan Rynarzewski and Tommy Ruel and Chris Mackey.

* The Severna Park 8-10 select boys basketball team improved its record to 41-1 this past weekend as it played solid defense in victories at the Cockeysville Shoot Out Tournament and in Catonsville Sunday league action.

At Cockeysville, the Hornets defeated the Catonsville Comets, 43-12, and at Catonsville, the Hornets defeated Arbutus, 35- 17. Divided into two teams for Saturday count league action, the Bullets defeated the other half, the Heat, 32-28, in overtime.

Point guard Dennard Melton led all Hornet weekend scorers with 33 points, followed by Matthew Briggs (21), Ryan Garrit (20), Mark Tiexeira (15) and Tim Smith (13). Ray Wagner, Marcus Johnson and Derek Dixon has six apiece; James Bowen (five); Nick Stook and Nathaniel Jennings, four each; and David Wagner (three) and Michael Flloyd (two).

* The Severna Athletic Club (8-1) clinched at least a tie for the 8-10 Saturday league championship at George Fox Middle School with a 23-18 victory over the Linthicum-Ferndale Youth Athletic Association (7-2).

Coach Bobby Harris' team can win the league title outright with a victory over Mago Vista at 10 a.m. this Saturday.

Rodney Farmer, Milton Tyler and Steve Spurlin tallied six points each for Severn in its win over LFYAA. Darriel Harris and Toby Green combined for the other five Severn points.

Coach Harris and his assistant David Green, watched their team avenge an earlier two-point loss to LFYAA.

8-10 girls

Brittney Jenkins provided her team with all seven points Friday night as the Flames downed the Greyhounds, 7-4, in a Mago Vista 8-10 girls match up at Windsor Farms Elementary.

Jamie Mankiewicz netted three points and Bonnie Sowa chipped in one in a losing effort for the Greyhounds.

The Flames (4-3) took the court again on Saturday in a makeup game with the Greyhounds, and again emerged victorious, this time by a score of 4-2.

Shelene Free and Jenkins scored two, points apiece for the victors while the Greyhounds' lone basket came off the hands of Sowa.

* In other 8-10 Mago Vista action Friday night, the Hot Shots improved their record to 6-1 by downing the Terps, 9-2.

Christine Seeley led the Hot Shots with six points, while team mates Courtney Petr and Devon Kazimir added two points and on point, respectively. Sheryl Galvin helped the Terps avoid a shutout by netting a deuce.

* Jaime Flynn tallied a game-high seven points Saturday to lead Ed Shuttleworth's Cape St. Claire #3 team past Cape's No.1 squad, 13-6, at Edgewater Elementary School.

Suzie Shuttleworth scored three points and pulled down six rebounds for the victors, while teammate Jennifer Gerety chipped in with two points and Tifln Lilly added one point and 10 steals. Stephanie Steimle played a great game defensively and pulled down several rebounds Cape.

Jessica Gosman and Nicole Westlund tallied two points apiece for Cape #1. Megan Kennedy and Kerri Moreland converted a foul shot each in the losing effort.

GYMNASTICS

Bartows

Barlows Gymnastics Inc. of Annapolis swept the first four places for overall scores in the Level 8 optional competition in Barlow's first home meet at its new facility last week.

Lori Bernia captured first place for her overall score from among 65 gymnasts on six teams, with a 34.4 overall. She was first in the floor exercise, second on the beam and uneven bars and third on vault.

Lauren Noland was second in her overall score with a 34.25. In addition Noland took first place on the uneven bars, second on vault and third on the beam and in the floor exercise.

Dawn Lenfest wasThird overall and scored first on beam, while teammate Christine Slagle finished fourth overall with a first on vault.

In Level 7 competition, Korynn Crocetti was second overall with a 33.2, scoring third on vault, while Natalie Brown was fourth overall turning in a first on bars. Erin Bond finished second on bars to round out the Level 7 winners for Barlows.

Barlows' Level 9 competitor Karen Thompson recently qualified for state competition through her performance at a sectional meet late last month at Fairland Gym in Laurel.

Thompson's qualifying performance earned her third place overall for the meet, with a score of 32.45. In earning that score she placed first on floor exercise with an 8.75.
