Navy notched what Coach Jim Barry called "a moral victory" Friday when the academy ice hockey team tied Eastern Michigan, 4-4, in the National Club Hockey Tournament in Tempe, Ariz.

It was the Mids' final game in their four-team round-robin division, and they are expectedhome at the Naval Academy this afternoon.

"The kids learned to play up to a higher level and I'm happy withthe way they played against some really outstanding teams," Barry said. "It was a moral victory, tying Eastern Michigan, because they hadonly lost to Penn State by 3-2.

"That's how much we improved in three games and a lot of people here said we were the class of the tournament."

In Friday's tie, Jeff Fogarty had a hat trick plus one assist, while Steve Roberto had a goal and an assist. Goalie Richie Doyle had 22 saves as Navy outshot its opponent, 40-26.

Navy, which finished its season at 15-6-2 overall, has been invited to play in a tournament next year at Penn State and will visit the University of Arizona in January 1992.

"That's the kind of impression we made," Barry said.

The Midshipmen lost to defending national champion PennState Thursday.

"We lost to a great team," Barry said. "They outshot us, 40-25, and we lost two kids to injuries, one with a separatedshoulder and the other with a bad cut on his neck.

"But it was agood, clean game. The competition here is unbelievable. I just heardthat the University of Rhode Island was beaten by somebody in the other division today, 17-0. It's been a great experience playing these guys who are in a higher league."

Navy dropped a 7-3 decision to the host University of Arizona Wednesday night in the first round of the tournament.

Arizona led, 1-0, after the first period and 4-2 bythe end of the second before putting the Midshipmen away in the final period.

"Actually, we didn't play that badly," Barry said. "We outshot them, 40-33, but they had three power-play goals and two short-handed scores that killed us."

Charlie Bowser, Jim Swanski and Fogarty tallied the goals for Navy.
