N.C. State's Corchiani passes 1,000 assists in loss to Wake

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Chris Corchiani became the first player in National Collegiate Athletic Association history to hand out 1,000 assists in a career, but Wake Forest spoiled the day as Anthony Tucker's two free throws with 23 seconds left helped the Demon Deacons to an 89-84 victory over North Carolina State yesterday.

Chris King added two free throws with 12 seconds to play, and the Demon Deacons (18-9, 8-6) nailed down a third-place tie in the Atlantic Coast Conference, their best finish since getting to fourth place in 1984.

OC Corchiani finished with 12 assists for a career total of 1,004. CLEMSON, S.C. -- Having become the only team in Atlantic Coast Conference history to go from the league championship to the league cellar in one year, Clemson (11-16, 2-12) needed a confidence builder against Georgia Tech.

They got it in the form of a 23-point, 18-rebound effort from senior center Dale Davis and a 69-62 win over Georgia Tech.

Davis, making his final appearance before the home fans, needed 13 rebounds coming into the game to become the third player to compile more than 1,200 rebounds, 200 blocked shots and 1,500 points in a career. The other two were former Virginia star Ralph Sampson and former Duke star Mike Gminski.

Davis reached the milestone midway through the second half. His record now stands at 210 block shots, 1,205 rebounds and 1,635 points.
