CNN splits Shaw and Crier

Bernard Shaw and Catherine Crier will officially be going their separate ways as CNN anchors starting Monday.

The two have been co-anchors of "The World Today," CNN's 6 p.m. newscast, since its premiere in September 1989. But, starting Monday, Shaw alone will anchor "Prime News" at 8 p.m. and the "Evening News" at 10 p.m., the network's most watched newscasts. CNN won't say who will do the 6 p.m. newscast.

Eileen Murphy, a CNN spokeswoman, confirmed yesterday that Shaw and Crier will not be together Monday when CNN plans to drop its schedule of wall-to-wall war coverage and resume regular programming. But Murphy said it had not been decided what newscasts Crier would anchor or co-anchor, or whether Shaw would have another co-anchor at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Crier, a former Texas judge, joined CNN in September 1989. Shaw's cool reception of his co-anchor was much commented on at the time.
