School-takeover proposal

THE BALTIMORE EVENING SUN

Nearly two thirds of callers to SUNDIAL yesterday said that the state should not take over the city school system.

Baltimore legislators have introduced a bill that would require the state to take over the city school system. Del. Paul Weisengoff, a sponsor of the bill, notes that the state has the ability to raise money that the city lacks. Politicians from other counties have criticized the city for lacking commitment to properly fund the school system while agreeing to fund downtown development projects.

Of 307 callers yesterday, 110, or 36 percent, said the state should take over city schools, while 197, or 64 percent, are opposed to the idea.

"It's Your Call" represents a sampling of opinions from certain segments of the community, but it is not balanced demographically, as a scientific public opinion poll would be.
