Budget crunch

Laying off state workers was the most popular solution to balancing the state budget, according to respondents to The Evening Sun's phone survey.

About 46 percent of the 558 respondents would opt first for layoffs; cutting aid to the counties was the first choice of 112 callers (20 percent), while only 79 (14 percent) would raise taxes first. The remaining 108 callers (19 percent) would find some other way.

"It's Your Call" represents a sampling of opinions from certain segments of the community, but it is not balanced demographically, as a scientific public opinion poll would be.
