Night Slew romps in feature at Laurel

THE BALTIMORE SUN

LAUREL -- Night Slew was purchased as a yearling for $300,000. "We thought we stole her," owner Hermen Greenberg said. "The sale was lagging at the time."

The 4-year-old daughter of Seattle Slew looked like a bargain yesterday, romping to a front-running victory over six rivals in the $19,000 allowance feature at Laurel Race Course.

The favorite led virtually all the way from the rail under jockey Rick Wilson to post her second victory in eight lifetime starts.

"She's an erratic filly who's learning all the time," said Wilson. "She was really hyper when Ben [trainer Benjamin Perkins] got her, but she's settling down a lot."

Wilson said Night Slew tired slightly because, "She was out there by herself," but she had plenty to fend off the rallying Sitting On Top.

Greenberg raced the horse in New York with little success last year. Maryland has been kinder to him and he "hopes to win a stakes with her. You can get Lasix here and not in New York."

He plans to retain her base in Maryland and go slowly with Night Slew
