Chopticon pins Southern (AA) for title


Chopticon High School of St. Mary's County, which battled Southern of Anne Arundel County to the last match, came away with a 140-131.5 victory in last night's Class 1A-2A Region III wrestling tournament at Glenelg High School.

The Braves, who held a 6.5-point lead over Southern going into the finals, beat Southern in two crucial final matches.

In the 103-pound final, Phillip Gainey decisioned Sherrard Neal, 3-1. Then, after Southern had pulled within 4.5 points on Chris Boston's 11-2 decision over Chopticon's Deric Holbrook in the 160-pound class, Braves heavyweight John Scheer sealed the victory with a 2-0 decision over Southern's Robert Burley.

Chopticon led the tournament with three champions. Jeff Daigle (112) won the team's third title by pinning Wilde Lake's Antoine Harris.

Southern grabbed two individual titles. Jason Braithwait joined Boston by winning the 152-pound title when he pinned Northeast's Kevin Shepke.

Wilde Lake finished third with 100.5 points, and the Wildecats took two titles. Bobby Farace decisioned Atholton's Tony Zancan, 11-4, in the 135-pound class. Ben Casella (171) beat Hammond's Dan Johnson, 7-0, to win his second straight regional championship.

Hammond finished fourth with 89.5 points. James Burrell took the Bears' only title in the 140-pound class with a 7-3 victory over Southern's David Ley.
