Howard Vinton Sutphin Sr., who owned a manufacturer's representative agency, died Jan. 15 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

He was 77 and had lived in Annapolis for 11 years, having moved there from Towson.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Sutphin was educated in New York City. He was the original factory representative for the Hunter Fan Co., selling fans to farmers for keeping livestock cool during the summer.

He later founded Manufacturer's Representative Agency, handling specialty products for several companies.

Mr. Sutphin was a prolific reader and an inventor, his family said. He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 622 and of Chapter 680 of the American Association of Retired Persons.

He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Lynn; a daughter, Susan Lynn Klapproth of Annapolis; a son, Howard Vinton "Chip" Sutphin Jr. of Northern Virginia; and four granddaughters.

A private service was held Jan. 19; a memorial service is planned in June.

The family suggested donations to the Hospice of Anne Arundel Medical Center.
