Penn State defeats St. Joseph's, 71-67

PHILADELPHIA -- Freddie Barnes scored 18 points and made two free throws in the final seconds, as Penn State rallied to defeat St. Joseph's, 71-67, in the Atlantic 10 last night.

St. Joseph's (9-16, 5-11) took a 65-60 lead on two free throws by Marlon Miller with 1 minute, 32 seconds remaining. But Barnes hit a layup and James Barnes added two free throws for Penn State (17-9, 10-7) with 1:16 to go.

Richard Stewart hit two foul shots for the Hawks with 1:14 remaining, and Freddie Barnes' three-pointer tied it at 67-67 with 1:03 left.

Barnes then made his two free throws. DeRon Hayes' layup at the buzzer padded the margin to four.

Trailing by 31-30 at halftime, St. Joseph's hit 10 of its first 15 shots and led, 52-46, after a three-pointer by Bernard Blunt with 10:39 left. St. Joseph's held the lead until Freddie Barnes' game-winning foul shots.

Hayes added 15 points and Dave Degitz 10 for the Nittany Lions. Blunt had 18 points and Rap Curry 17 for the Hawks.

St. Francis (Pa.) 66 Monmouth 63


LORETTO, Pa. -- Mike Iuzzolino scored 17 and John Hilvert added 12 to lead St. Francis, Pa., (20-7, 12-3) over Monmouth (17-9, 9-6) to remain tied for first place in the Northeast Conference.

Joe Anderson added 11 points for the Red Flash, who are tied with Fairleigh Dickinson with one conference game remaining for each.

This is St. Francis' first 20-win season since 1967.

L Alex Blackwell had 27 points and nine rebounds for Monmouth.

St. Francis led, 33-31, at halftime and extended the lead to 55-47 with 8:21 remaining on a three-pointer by Hilvert.

Monmouth closed within 64-63 with 1:26 remaining on one of two free throws by Blackwell.

After Iuzzolino hit two free throws with 10 seconds remaining, Monmouth had a chance to tie, but Andy Partee's three-pointer with five seconds left was short.

Blackwell rebounded the errant shot and put up a desperation three-pointer, but it also was short as time ran out.
