They are college stars now, but neither of the Boyd brothers was the headliner at Walbrook High in 1985-86. The top player for the Warriors then was another guard, Kevin McDaniels, who's the top player at South Alabama and a possible Sun Belt Conference all-star.
A first-team All-Metro selection, McDaniels played two junior college seasons, one at Allegany and another at Faulkner State in Alabama, not far from Mobile, where he plays now.
He averaged 11.4 points at South Alabama last season, when coach Ronnie Arrow brought in another former Baltimore schoolboy star, Dunbar grad Karl "Boobie" James. James scored 10.8 a game last year, but his contribution this year was delayed when he had to sit out the first five games because of transcript problems dating back to his transfer from UNLV.
A muscular 6 feet 2, McDaniels took control of the Jaguars early this season. He's averaging a team-high 13.5 points on 54.3 percent shooting, excellent for a guard, and is second on the team in assists and steals.
McDaniels is Player of the Week in the Sun Belt Conference, following a 92-85 upset win at then-No. 9 Southern Mississippi in which he collected 19 points, nine rebounds, five steals and five assists. The Jaguars, who are getting 7.1 points a game from James, are 16-7 overall, 9-2 in the Sun Belt.
Before the Southern Mississippi win, one of McDaniels' greatest moments came on Dec. 5, 1985, when he led Walbrook to a 68-57 win over Dunbar, the Poets' first loss to a Baltimore opponent since March 1981.
"We had to have one of the best three-guard setups the city's ever had," Andre Boyd said.
