An eviction hearing scheduled for today for the Theatre Project, which owes $20,000 in back rent, has been called off, representatives of the experimental theater and its landlord said yesterday.
Dan Henson, senior development director for Struever Brothers, Eccles & Rouse, the landlord for the theater at 45 W. Preston St., said yesterday the parties had "worked out" a payment plan and that there was "no reason to be in court" today.
He declined to provide details but said his company was hopeful of receiving the full amount of back rent "shortly."
Somerset Waters, chairman of the Theatre Project board, said the landlord had agreed to "hold off any court action" after the theater agreed to make its current monthly rent payment of approximately $2,000 and said it planned to pay off its creditors by June.
Mr. Waters said Struever Brothers told the theater it would "take us back to court" if repayment did not begin by next week.
He said the theater also had overdue bank loans, the amount of which he would not divulge. He said the theater was seeking funds from private sources and was asking the city, which had administered a federal loan to renovate the theater's building, to forgive $12,000 in past debts and defer for six months payment of another $12,000.
On Friday, a Department of Housing and Community Development official said the city would consider "some possible reworking of the loan."
