Morgan to name Air Force aide as football coach Diggs made stops at Citadel, S. Carolina

Ricky Diggs, an assistant coach at the Air Force Academy, is expected to be named head football coach at Morgan State University this afternoon when the school holds a news conference.

Diggs, the wide-receivers coach in his year at Air Force, would replace Ed Wyche, who was fired after three years and a 1-10 record in 1990.

This will be the first head coaching position for Diggs, 37, a Harrisburg, Pa., native.

Morgan State has not had a winning record since the 1979 team went 9-1 and lost in the first round of the Division II playoffs. In the 1980s, the Bears had six head coaches and a combined 21-79 record. From 1984-89, the team won more than one game only once.

Diggs was an all-conference running back at Shippensburg and the school's first 1,000-yard rusher before his graduation in 1975.

He began his coaching career at John Harris High School in Harrisburg, and made his college coaching debut at The Citadel (1980-82). The next year, he became an assistant at South Carolina under Joe Morrison, coaching receivers and running backs for six years.

Diggs was not retained by new head coach Sparky Woods after Morrison's death in February 1989, and was out of football that year.
