For Oakland Mills, 6 individual titles, 12th county crown

...TC Oakland Mills won its 12th Howard County Wrestling Tournament in 15 years last night, as the Scorpions took six individual titles and outdistanced their nearest competitor by 57 1/2 points.

Oakland Mills scored 233 1/2 points, just eight points shy of last year's county-record 241 1/2 . Hammond finished second with 176. Wilde Lake was third with 171 1/2 .

The Scorpions, who went undefeated in the county for the third straight year under third-year coach Dan Ricker, were sparked by 112-pound champion Danny Bickell, who took the first title for Oakland Mills.

Bickell severely dislocated his left elbow in practice Wednesday, and the heavy bandages on the elbow left him with the use of only one arm. He won the title with a 7-2 decision over Centennial's Paul Badawi.

The Scorpions then took five more titles. Kalev Freeman (119), Adam Seidman (125), Mike Maughan (130), Joe Salinas (140) and heavyweight Monte Spencer also won championships.

After a quarterfinal round that concluded with Oakland Mills, Atholton, Wilde Lake and Hammond separated by six points, the Scorpions took command in the semifinals. When that round was over, Oakland Mills had opened up a 42-point lead over Wilde Lake, and the Scorpions had nine wrestlers headed for the finals.
