FDU deals Mount 82-69 loss, as Wilson hits for 32 points

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Desi Wilson and Clive Anderson combined for 31 of Fairleigh Dickinson's 37 first-half points, and Wilson finished with 32 and 13 rebounds to lead the Knights to an 82-69 victory over Mount St. Mary's in a Northeast Conference game last night.

Wilson, last year's NEC Player of the Year and a front-runner for the award again this season, scored six unanswered points to give FDU (18-7, 11-3) a 16-10 lead with 11 minutes, 47 seconds to play in the half. The Knights increased their advantage to as many as 11 before winding up with a 37-28 edge at halftime.

Senior center Chris Cavanagh almost single-handedly kept the Mount (8-17, 6-8) close in the first 20 minutes with 12 of his team-high 19 points and eight rebounds.

Freshman Dave Kapaona and junior Jeff Hall led an early second-half Mount run as the visitors cut the gap to a field goal. Hall hit three three-point baskets and Kapaona scored six as the Mount drew to within 48-46 with 12:43 remaining.

Mel Hawkins ignited a 9-2 FDU burst with a three-point field goal, and Brad McClain came off the bench to score three three-pointers to help the Knights pull away.

Hall, who had five three-point baskets, and Kapaona each finished with 17 points. Hall got 14 in the second half, and Kapaona had all but two of his in the same segment. Cavanagh finished with 11 rebounds.

Anderson, who had 16 points in his first collegiate start a month ago against Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, finished with 20 points for Fairleigh Dickinson.
