Elizabeth C. Payne Was school nurse


A memorial service for Elizabeth C. Payne, who had been the first school nurse at Towson High School, will be held at 3 p.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church, 5407 N. Charles St.

Mrs. Payne, who was 80 and lived in the Dulaney Towers Apartments, died Sunday at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center of heart disease.

She retired as the nurse at Towson in 1971 after working there for 20 years. She had earlier done private-duty nursing and served as assistant nursing supervisor at Church Home and Hospital.

Born in Baltimore, the former Elizabeth C. Stroh was a 1928 graduate of Western High School and a 1931 graduate of the Church Home and Hospital nursing school. She also did graduate work in maternal and child care at Case Western Reserve University.

A former president of the nursing school alumnae association, she had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church for 30 years and was a member of the Altar Guild and the United Methodist Women there.

Her husband, Ernest F. Payne, retired chief of window services at Baltimore-area post offices, died in 1989.

She is survived by a son, F. Carvel Payne of Severna Park; a daughter, Claire P. Greenhouse of Towson; a sister, Florence A. Hoerichs of Baltimore; and five grandchildren.
