Services for Lawrence Williams, a teacher and free-lance writer, will be held at 3 p.m. today at St. John's United Methodist Church, 27th and St. Paul streets.

Mr. Williams, who was 31 and lived on Cathedral Street, was killed Feb. 7 in a hit-and-run accident while riding his bicycle at Fremont Avenue and Baltimore Street.

For the past nine months, he had been an English teacher and director of placement at a business and trade school, the Temple School Campus of the National Education Center.

Earlier, while completing a novel, he did free-lance writing, including articles and stories for Baltimore magazine, Modern Age and the City Paper and book reviews in The Sun.

A native of Cincinnati, he was reared in Silver Spring, where he graduated from Springbrook High School.

He majored in English while earning a bachelor's degree at the University of Maryland in College Park.

He liked to ride his bicycle all over the city and had been a volunteer in adult-education and outreach programs at St. John's.

He is survived by his father, Alexander Williams IV, and his stepmother, Gertrude Williams of Boynton Beach, Fla.; his mother, Eleanor Williams of San Francisco; a brother, Alexander Williams V of Alexandria, Va.; a sister, Margaret Fink of San Francisco; and his fiancee, Shirley Hubalek of Baltimore.
