Oakland Mills remains Howard County's team on a roll, although the Scorpions had to work harder than the final score indicates for last night's 73-54 victory at Mount Hebron.
There were 15 ties, the last at 47 with two minutes left in the third quarter, before Oakland Mills (13-6, 9-2) pulled away to win its seventh straight game and avenge a 65-47 loss to the Vikings (6-5, 9-10) Jan. 18.
That the score was almost reversed this time was indicative of the Scorpions' shooting (32 of 56, 57 percent) and command of the boards (29-18), plus more cohesive play.
Guard Carruthers Gant, who has been suffering with tonsillitis came off the Scorpions bench to lead all scorers with 26 points. Center Mark Terry added 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Mount Hebron shot well in the first half (13 of 26) and through three quarters (20 of 43, 47 percent), but fell apart in the fourth.
Two-of-17 shooting and nine turnovers enabled Oakland Mills to race away from a 51-47 lead entering the last eight minutes.
The victory enabled Oakland Mills to maintain a one-game lead over Hammond and Wilde Lake in the Howard County race.
