Gov. William Donald Schaefer will serve his second year as honorary chairman of the Central Maryland J. C. Penney Golden Rule Awards. Several county residents in the past have won the award.

The awards ceremony will take place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at Martin's West.

The Golden Rule Awards, founded by the J. C. Penney Co., were established to honor the Central Maryland volunteers who best exemplify the spirit of volunteerism.

The governor will present a specially commissioned bronze sculpture, a certificate and a $1,000 grant to each of the five adult and one youth winners.

The grants will be given, in each winner's name, to the non-profit organization associated with the winner's efforts.

The Central Maryland winners will also proceed to the J. C. Penney National Golden Rule Awards, where each will receive a gold sculpture and a $10,000 grant to his or her non-profit organization.

The 10 finalists will each receive a certificate and a $250 grant to the non-profit organization associated with their efforts.

Nomination forms for the Golden Rule Awards can be obtained at the catalog desks of local J. C. Penney stores or by calling. March 16 is the deadline for nominations.
