Second-half rally helps Loyola halt Niagara for 67-65 victory

Loyola College outscored Niagara by 18-3 during a six-minute stretch midway in the second half as the Greyhounds won, 67-65, last night before 1,850 at Reitz Arena.

It was the fifth victory in six games for the Greyhounds, (11-11 4-7 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), and their sixth straight game in which the outcome has been decided by six points or fewer.

"I think we try to keep it interesting," Loyola coach To Schneider said. "Tonight, we just couldn't hit the foul shots to put it away. I know one thing: I'm getting a little grayer from all of this."

Loyola had trailed most of the game until rallying in the secon half. The Greyhounds converted on seven of eight shots midway through the period, with forward Kevin Anderson making three three-pointers. Anderson made all four of his three-point attempts in finishing with a game-high 21 points.

Guard Tracy Bergan had 15 points for Loyola. Forward Dwayn Daniel led Niagara (6-16, 4-9) with 16.

At one point, Niagara went nearly five minutes without a basket as Loyola dominated with its transition game. The Greyhounds' biggest lead came at 49-38 with 10 minutes, 2 seconds left, and they were up by eight six minutes later.

But Loyola had trouble making foul shots and could not put th game away. The Greyhounds were five for 13 from the foul line in the last 4:15, but Bergan made two with nine seconds left to give Loyola a 67-62 lead.

"Thank goodness for Kevin Anderson," Schneider said. "It's the second straight game he has bailed us out. Once he squares up to the basket, he's pretty accurate on those three-point shots." Anderson has made 31 of 81 three-point attempts this season.

Loyola was dominated underneath on both ends of the court i the first half, but clutch foul shooting by guard Kevin Green helped the Greyhounds trail by only 28-27 at the half. The Greyhounds were out-rebounded, 18-10, in the half and 44-24 for the game.
