Boston College more than Able to rout UMES Area college roundup

Calvert Hall product Doug Able scored 10 points as Boston College jumped out to a 17-4 lead, then turned the show over to David Hinton, who scored a career-high 29 points in leading the Eagles to a 113-64 rout of Maryland Eastern Shore in Newton, Mass., last night.

Able, a 6-foot-6 senior forward, finished with 19 points to complement sophomore center Hinton, who hit 12 of 13 shots in the second half.

Gerrod Abram contributed 14 points for Boston College (11-11), Howard Eisley had 13 and Corey Jackson 10.

Darrick Purnell, with 12 points, was the only UMES player in double figures.

UMES (4-17), among the national leaders in three-point shooting, hit less than 20 percent from long range and only 28 percent overall. Boston College also enjoyed a 54-45 rebounding edge.

ELIZABETH CITY 94 BOWIE ST. 84

* In Elizabeth City, N.C., Darryl Riddick scored 32 points as Elizabeth City State (10-11, 5-4) grabbed a 22-point halftime lead en route to a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association victory over Bowie State (7-15, 1-8).

The Vikings took a 54-32 lead at intermission and hung on despite shooting 32 percent.

Bowie State got 27 points from Chuck Gholston and 13 each from Kevin Purnell and Brian Forbes.

FLORIDA A&M; 95 MORGAN ST. 84

* In Tallahassee, Fla., DeLon Turner scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed a career-best 22 rebounds, leading Florida A&M; (10-10, 7-4) over Morgan State (4-18, 4-7) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Morgan State was led by Steven Haynes with 24 points, including six three-point goals. Glenn Smith added 20 points and James McCoy had 16.
