Daniel T. Doherty, 83, retired chairman of the State Workmen's Compensation Commission, died Monday at the Montgomery General Hospital after an illness of several months.
A mass of Christian burial was being offered today at St. Catherine Laboure Roman Catholic Church in Wheaton.
Mr. Doherty, who lived in Olney, retired in 1976 after chairing the commission since 1962 and being a member since 1958. For 10 years before that, he was a member of its predecessor, the State Industrial Accident Commission.
He was a former president of the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions and of the Southern Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions and, in the early 1970s served on the National Commission to Study Workmen's Compensation Laws.
After retiring, he was appointed chairman of the Federal Land Commission, which acquires property for the Washington Metro System.
Survivors include his wife, the former Frances Broadbent; a daughter, Anne D. Bottner of Mitchellville; a son, Daniel T. Doherty Jr. of Frederick; a sister, Isabelle Gillespie of Jeannette; and three grandchildren.
