James L. Carroll Retired school principal

A Mass of Christian burial for James L. Carroll, a retired school principal, will be offered at 7 p.m. today at St. Pius V Roman Catholic Church, 521 N. Schroeder St.

Mr. Carroll, who was 72 and lived on Ivy Avenue in the Lauraville area, died Friday at St. Joseph Hospital after a heart attack.


He retired about 10 years ago as principal of the Southeast Middle School and had been principal of the Roland Park Elementary and Middle School and assistant principal of the Patterson Senior High School.

He also taught social studies at Dunbar and Douglass high schools and headed the social studies department at the Harlem Park Junior High. Earlier, he taught at Bates High School in Annapolis and at the Christiansburg Academy in Virginia.


Born in Blacksburg, Va., he was a graduate of Virginia State University, did graduate work at Michigan State University and earned a master's degree at Loyola College.

He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and of the executive board of the Retired Teachers Association.

A former member of the Board of Christian Formation of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, he was a member of the board of the Charles A. Hall Cluster School and president of the Parish Council of St. Pius V. Church.

He is survived by his wife, the former Rebecca Evans; and a daughter, Constance Carroll of Mission Viejo, Calif.
